At Afro Discoveries, we understand the excitement, anticipation, and emotions that can come with traveling to Africa, especially for our African American sistas and brothas. For many of us, this is more than a vacation. It’s an opportunity to experience the culture, history, people, and beauty of the continent in a deeply personal way.
To help you feel confident and prepared for the journey ahead, we’ll host two virtual Pre Trip Preparation Meetings before departure. These sessions are designed to answer your questions, connect you with your fellow travelers, and make sure you know what to expect before we touch down in South Africa.

Our Johannesburg experience will blend powerful history and cultural exploration with food, community, social experiences, and one of the biggest highlights of the journey: an escape from the city into the African bush for an unforgettable safari experience.

Johannesburg gives us an opportunity to explore some of the defining chapters of modern South African history. Potential experiences include the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Soweto, and Vilakazi Street, where the country's struggle, resilience, and transformation become much more than something read about in a history book.
🏘️ Experience Soweto
We’re exploring ways to experience Soweto through its people, neighborhoods, food, and history. That could mean visiting significant landmarks, sharing a meal at a popular local restaurant, discovering cultural spaces, and experiencing the energy of one of South Africa’s most famous townships.
🍸 Eat, Connect & Experience Joburg After Dark
History is only one part of Johannesburg. We also want travelers to experience the city as people enjoy it today, with opportunities for great restaurants, cocktail lounges, music, nightlife, and socializing with locals.
🤲🏾 Roots of Giving Back
Community remains an important part of the Afro Discoveries experience. During our time in Johannesburg, we hope to incorporate a meaningful Roots of Giving Back experience through a local school, organization, or community initiative.
🦒 From the City to the African Bush
Then, we leave the energy of Johannesburg behind.
We’ll journey approximately two hours outside the city for a completely different South African experience, trading city streets for open landscapes and wildlife.
Guests will settle into accommodations near a wildlife reserve and experience an authentic African safari, with opportunities to spot incredible wildlife while exploring the reserve with experienced guides.

*Complimentary airport transfers are provided for international flights arriving and departing between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on scheduled group arrival and departure days. Transfers requested outside of these hours may be subject to an additional fee to cover after-hours driver service.
Should I purchase travel insurance?
Absolutely! We would highly recommend you purchase Travel Protection to help protect yourself and your trip investment. Life can be unpredictable. Even the best-planned trips can be impacted by the unexpected. Travel insurance can help with medical coverage for illness or injury, trip cancellation and/or interruption, baggage loss, medical evacuation, and more.
Although we do not endorse a particular insurance company, we will provide a list of companies and descriptions of travel benefits at the time of booking.
Is there a payment plan?
Yes! See our trip Payment Options page, found here, for more details.
Is there a refund policy?
Yes! Our refund policy is based on the timing of cancellation relative to the trip’s start date. Pre-paid trip payments made to Afro Discoveries are non-refundable on or after 60 days of the trip start date. However, you may transfer your reservation to another traveler, provided Afro Discoveries is notified by September 1 of the year in which the trip departs. The transfer request must be approved by Afro Discoveries and will be subject to a transfer fee of $300.
Cancellations made:
- 100+ days before the trip receive a 90% refund.
- 75–99 days before the trip receive a 50% refund.
- 61–74 days before the trip receive a 25% refund.
All refunds are minus a $200 non-refundable cancellation fee per person. No refunds are issued for cancellations within 60 days of the trip.
The purchase of travel insurance is recommended.
Do I need special vaccinations?
Generally, no. There are no compulsory vaccinations for travelers arriving to South Africa directly from the United States.
Some safari regions in Southern Africa may have malaria risk during certain times of the year. If our itinerary includes travel to one of these areas, we will provide travelers with additional information well in advance of departure so they can discuss appropriate precautions with their healthcare provider.
Above all, we recommend that travelers be up-to-date on routine vaccinations and consult their healthcare provider or a travel health clinic at least 6 weeks before departure regarding any recommended immunizations or medications based on their personal health needs and our final itinerary.
